Circle of Darkness: Arena
Circle of Darkness: Arena is a game developed by Larry Mak in 1998. It was done when he decided (for whatever reason) that he needed to learn Perl. It took him about three days of learning and coding together to finish the game. Consequently he balanced the game a little more, as well as added in new features. In a short week, everyone in his high school tried it, or heard of it.
How did it evolve to how it is today? The players did it. Simply speaking, a few players would keep requesting changes, and Larry did what he thought was cool. Of course, this doesn't always make for balanced game play, but the game was fun. One subtle example is the clan system.
Game Basics
Circle of Darkness: Arena (CoD:A often shortened to CoD) is a text / browser / tick based RPG, with an emphasis towards PVP interaction rather than dungeon crawling. Characters compete in a world where they are ranked by fame, this is accumulated by attacking (either physically or magically) other players. The amount of fame gained from an attack is based on both the attacker's and defender's bounty levels. However this is not where the competition ends. While becoming first in fame is normally the primary target for a character, a character can aim for other things such as dominance, kills and attributes. A character's stats or attributes are loosely based on the D&D skill set: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence and Wisdom. Attributes are not capped around the 20 mark as in many D&D variants and can grow to the thousands by the time of reset. Rounds, or games, last for 6 weeks. Each character begins the game with a pool of 80 attribute points to distribute as the player wishes. A common starting strategy is to begin with 76 strength and 1 in the other attributes. Character's will always have a minimum of 1 in each attribute. Arena is a 'tick' based game and every action a character performs requires turns, for example to train 1 attribute point requires 1 turn (and experience) or performing a 'regular attack' requires 2 turns. These turns are generated at a rate of 1 every 5 minutes.
Clan Basics
A clan system exists in the world of CoD, with different clans competing for 'clan fame' in much the same way individual fame is contested. Any character can create a clan and in doing so become the 'clan leader'. It is then the clan leaders task to recruit players for his/her clan to help increase clan fame. There exists no cap on clan numbers however there are disadvantages to infinitely increasing clan size. Attacking other character's in the same clan greatly reduces clan fame and this may be hard to avoid if numbers grow too large. Clan size has greatly fluctuated throughout CoD's history and has also seen the creation of a number of sister clans.
